A novice swimmer is typically new to swim lessons, or has only had some experience with swim lessons. Novice lessons are designed to get swimmers comfortable in the water, help them learn different ways of moving around, and develop a basic understanding of water safety.
The two Novice swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Shrimp and Guppy. In these levels, some of the skills swimmers are mastering include (but are not limited to):
- demonstrating comfort in the water
- putting face and head underwater
- rolling from back to front and front to back
A beginner swimmer has typically had some swim lessons in the past and is comfortable being in shallow water. Beginner lessons focus on developing independence in the water, basic of stroke technique and a better understanding of water safety. Basic forward and backward swimming is learned in beginner lessons.
The three Beginner swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Sailfish, Grouper, and Swordfish. In these levels, some of the skills swimmers are mastering include (but are not limited to):
- swim independently for 10-15 yard (approximately ½ the distance between the docks)
- whip (frog) kick
- treading water
- retrieving objects from bottom in shallow water
- jump into water (unaided)
- freestyle (front crawl) with coordinated arms and legs and face in water
- basic elementary backstroke
An intermediate swimmer is becoming more confident and independent in the water, even in water where they cannot touch the bottom. Intermediate swimmers have some understanding of stroke technique. Intermediate lessons focus on introducing and developing stroke technique including freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke. Water safety in these lessons incorporates helping others in addition to personal water safety.
The three Intermediate swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Marlin, Seal, and Shark. In these levels, some of the skills swimmers are mastering include (but are not limited to):
- fully coordinated freestyle (front crawl) with rotary breathing
- developing breaststroke and backstroke skills
- deep water bobbing
- seated and kneeling dives
An advanced swimmer begins with an existing understanding of four major strokes: freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. Advanced lessons focus on developing endurance in the water through the use of lap swimming. Advanced swimmers will work on improving their existing stroke technique and will learn the basics of sidestroke and butterfly.
The two Advanced swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Dolphin and Stingray. In these levels, some of the skills swimmers are mastering include (but are not limited to):

- introduction of butterfly motion
- basic sidestroke skills
- surface dives
- ability to swim 1-2 laps with good form of each stroke (freestyle, elementary backstroke, backstroke, and breaststroke) without stopping
An expert swimmer has an understanding of all strokes and is able to swim for an extended period of time before tiring. Expert lessons focus on perfecting stroke technique and extending endurance in the water. Additional skills such as checking heart rate, dives, and rescues will be taught in this level.
The two Expert swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Barracuda and Kingfish. In these levels, some of the skills swimmers are mastering include (but are not limited to):
Advanced Expert Levels
A swimmer in advanced expert lessons has moved past a need to “learn how to swim”. These lessons focus on endurance and incorporation of extra skills, students in these levels will not be “taught how to swim” and need to show exceptional abilities with only minor stroke work needed. Swimmers in this level should not have much difficulty keeping their stroke technique solid throughout the entire distance they are swimming, and their speed should be increased from previous levels. Swimmers in these levels will often want to be pushed harder and try new things.
The five Advanced Expert swim levels at Everwood Day Camp are Neptune. Jr. Varsity, Varsity, Collegiate, and Masters.
