LITs start each day with two skills and service periods, which span leadership development training facilitated by LIT mentors, team-building activities with peers, and the facilitation of youth-led community service projects.
Team building takes many forms such as:
- Partnered challenges navigating obstacle courses!
- Designing team flags for our camp wide Everwoodlympics!
- Practicing various modes of non-verbal and verbal communication!
- Working in groups to create themed activities for younger campers!
Through the skills and service periods Leaders in Training develop and practice essential social and interpersonal skills, including healthy risk-taking, effective communication, empathy, and the confidence to navigate new situations and challenges.
LITs participate in critical conversations about social systems of inequality and how to make camp more accessible for community members. Through engagement in these periods LITs grow their empathy, alongside their feelings of responsibility to their communities!
Additionally, LITs receive basic instruction on child psychology and behavior management strategies to prepare them to work in short sessions with younger campers!
